The Right Moment

by Mark Garrett

The past weeks that I've spent at ARCOS dance have added a new dimension to my photography. Every experience, every place, and every person adds something new to my knowledge, but at ARCOS, there's a special, kinetic quality to the photos. Half-documenting, half-instinct—my three or more rolls of thirty-six exposures each time I got to rehearsals are filled with the energy of the dancers' movements.

First there's the physical act of taking the photos: a careful, calculated waiting-game for the right moment, with the right shutter speed to capture an arm or a leg jolting through space, threatening to hit me in the face if I get too close. Then there's the perfection: some of the images look intentionally spectral, capturing a movement over the course of its execution, but my experience is still of waiting for that something I know will look good.

It's a double hardship. the dancers attempt a perfect arm movement, body sway, foot flex, and then there's me, waiting for the particular gesture that looks best from a particular angle at a particular time.

Lastly, there's the sense of documenting: of getting the right shot of a collaboration, of photographing the videographer and his similar feelings attempting to capture dancers on film, of what it means to be in preparation: the strain, the length of rehearsals exhibited by the hundreds of photographs I have thus far. It's a wonderful experience to be thrown into such energy, such excitement over a group goal.
